Granitogres – a granite spirit in a ceramic body. The Italian for granitogres is gres porcellanato, and it should be noted that this word group (gres – stone-ceramic article and porcellano - porcelain) quite accurately reflects the nature of the material since it is close to the porcelain-ceramic article in composition but in properties and aesthetic appearance it is comparable to the natural granite stone.
Production of a variety of surfaces, colours and sizes
Granitogres is produced under a high-tech process. Its composition is mainly white clay and additives of feldspar, quartz and other minerals. The material is well mixed and then pressed under very high pressure - 400N/sm2 and baked at high temperature - 1200-1300 ° C. The result are very solid tiles with a homogeneous structure which gives the finished product great rigidness, mechanical stability, low water absorption capacity (0.02-0.05%), resistance to freezing and high temperature amplitudes. To obtain an article with the required colour, mineral pigments are added in the raw material, which are evenly distributed in the thickness of the tile and make it look like a natural granite.
According to the characteristics of its surface granitogres is unpolished (matt), semi-polished, polished (with glitter), satin (with varnish), structured, rectified and glazed. The matt version does not undergo further processing and preserves these features of its surface which were obtained after the baking process. Its surface does not shine but is characterized by great strength and durability. Semi-polished and polished versions are elegant in appearance but are more capricious. On the one hand processing with abrasive material gives them a mirror shine, on the other – it reduces their durability. Just like the polished natural stone, this type of granitogres requires treatment with special mixtures that create a protective layer on the surface. This is necessary because in the process of polishing part of the pores that have been closed open, while at the same time the tiles should acquire durability as well as resistance to water.
The standard sizes of granitogres tiles are 15x15, 20x20, 30x30, 30x40, 40x60, 60x60 cm and others, with thickness from 7 to 30 millimetres. The most commonly used tiles are 8-14 millimetres thick.
One of the most important qualities of granitogres is its low porosity and consequently - its phenomenal fortitude. It is distinguished by great mechanical resistance in comparison with ceramic tiles as well as with natural stone.
Despite its southern origin, granitogres is a material that could easily be used outdoors and in countries with cold climate. Its exceptional cold resistance (up to -50 ° C) is the result of its record low water absorption capacity which in its turn is due to its density. As there are no pores on the surface, water cannot get inside the material and destroy it. Another advantage of the granitogres is that it does not alter its colour over time; it is sustainable to the impact of acids and bases, does not burn and is environmentally clean and safe.
